새로운 정치세력화를 선언하며 탈당을 결행한 안철수 전 새정치민주연합 공동대표의 지지율이 1년 4개월 만에 10%대에 진입한 것으로 나타났다고 여론조사 전문업체 리얼미터가 14일 밝혔다. 리얼미터가 지난 7~11일 실시한 여론조사 결과 차기 대권주자 가운데 안 전 대표의 지지율은 전주에 비해 1.8% 포인트 오른 10.1%를 기록했다. 지난해 7월 말 이후 무려 16개월 만에 처음 10%대로 올라선 것으로, 특히 지난주 호남(13.9%→21.0%)과 무당층(17.0%→21.8%)에서 지지율이 큰 폭으로 오른 것으로 조사됐다. 전체 순위는 전주와 같은 4위를 유지했다. 그러나 이번 조사는 안 전 대표의 탈당 선언(13일) 이전에 실시된 것이어서 탈당 이후 호남과 무당층을 중심으로 어떤 지지율의 변화를 보일지 주목된다. 새누리당 김무성 대표가 전주에 비해 1.2% 포인트 오른 21.8%를 기록하면서 24주 연속으로 선두 자리를 지켰고, 2, 3위인 새정치연합 문재인 대표(18.5%)와 박원순 서울시장(12.1%)은 각각 0.1% 포인트와 0.2% 포인트 하락했다. 박근혜 대통령의 국정수행 지지율은 전주보다 1.8% 포인트 하락한 46.0%로, 최근 3주간의 상승세를 마감했다. 정당 지지율은 새누리당이 0.6% 포인트 하락한 42.3%로 5주 만에 하락세로 돌아섰고, 새정치연합도 26.8%로 0.1% 포인트 떨어졌다. 반면 정의당은 0.3% 포인트 오른 6.6%를 기록하며 창당 이후 처음으로 3주 연속 6%대 지지율을 이어갔다. 이번 주간집계는 지난 7일부터 11일까지 5일간 전국 19세 이상 유권자 2587명을 대상으로 전화면접(CATI) 및 자동응답(ARS) 방식으로 무선전화(50%)와 유선전화(50%) 병행 임의걸기(RDD) 방법으로 조사했다. 응답률은 6.4%(전화면접 20.2%, 자동응답 4.9%)였으며 표본오차는 95% 신뢰수준에서 ±1.9%p이다. 이범수 기자 bulse46@seoul.co.kr

머나먼 화성에서 임무수행 중인 미 항공우주국(NASA)의 탐사로봇 큐리오시티(Curiosity) 로버가 처음으로 지구 밖 사구(砂丘)의 모습을 촬영하는데 성공했다. 지난 11일(현지시간) NASA는 큐리오시티가 촬영한 화성 사구와 생생한 모래 확대 사진을 홈페이지를 통해 공개했다. 공개된 사진을 보면 전인미답의 화성 모래는 지구와 마찬가지로 물결처럼 바람에 흔들리는 모습이 눈에 띈다. 또한 확대된 모래 사진에는 일정한 크기의 고운 알갱이가 마치 보석처럼 빛나는 모습이 담겨있어 경외감마저 자아낸다. 이 사진은 지구시간으로 지난 5일, 화성시간으로 큐리오시티가 화성 탐사를 시작한지 1184솔(SOL·화성의 하루 단위. 1솔은 24시간 37분 23초로 지구보다 조금 더 길다)에 배그놀드(Bagnold Dunes)라 불리는 사구에서 촬영한 것이다. 샤프산 북서쪽 자락에 위치한 검은색 모래언덕인 배그놀드는 2층 빌딩 높이로 전체적으로 검은 색을 띄고있는 것이 특징이다. 특히 배그놀드는 아직도 ‘살아있는’ 상태로 화성 바람을 타고 지구시간으로 매년 1m 정도씩 움직인다. 지난달 말 이곳에 첫 바퀴를 굴린 큐리오시티는 팔에 장착된 ‘MAHLI’(Mars Hand Lens Imager)라는 특수 카메라로 화성 모래의 모습을 정밀하게 촬영했다. MAHLI는 폭 4cm 정도의 소형 카메라지만, 최고 12.5㎛의 세밀한 분해능을 가지고 있어 암석등 표면 구조를 연구하는 데 큰 역할을 한다. NASA 제트추진연구소 연구원이자 칼텍 공대 베타니 애흘만 박사는 “이번 탐사로 화성 사구의 구조와 성분에 대한 정보를 얻게될 것”이라면서 “과거 로버가 모래지대를 지나간 적은 있으나 이번같은 활동적인 사구는 아니었다” 고 설명했다. 한편 지구 달력으로 3년 전인 지난 2012년 8월 6일 우리 돈으로 2조 8000억 원을 들여 만든 큐리오시티는 무사히 이곳 화성에 착륙했다. 이후 성공적으로 탐사를 벌이고 있는 큐리오시티는 2년 8개월 만인 지난 4월 총 10km의 주행거리를 돌파했다. 현재 샤프산 기슭에 도착해 수개월 째 탐사중인 큐리오시티는 느릿느릿 움직이지만 소중한 정보를 지구로 전송하고 있다. 크레이터 중앙에 우뚝 선 샤프산은 침전물이 쌓여 형성된 것으로 추정되며 그 높이가 땅바닥을 기준으로 1만 8000피트(5,486m)에 달해 지구 최고봉인 에베레스트산(해수면 기준 8,848m)보다 실제로는 더 높다. 박종익 기자 pji@seoul.co.kr

지난 1977년 영화사에 길이남은 기념적비적인 영화 한 편이 개봉됐다. 바로 조지 루카스 감독의 할리우드 SF 영화 ‘스타워즈4’다. 특히 영화에는 태양이 두 개 뜨는 외계행성이 등장하는데 바로 주인공 루크 스카이워커가 살던 ‘타투인’(Tatooine)이다. 루카스 감독이 창조해낸 가상의 공간이다. 최근 포브스, 데일리메일등 해외언론이 타투인의 현재 모습을 보도해 관심을 끌고있다. 실제 외계행성이라고 착각이 들만큼 황량했던 이곳은 아프리카 튀니지 사막 한복판에 위치해있다. 당시 스타워즈 제작진은 이곳에 세트장을 설치하고 여러 명장면을 촬영해 팬들에게 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 이후 이 장소는 스타워즈 팬들에게 있어 일종의 ‘성지순례’ 장소로 각광받았으나 점점 잊혀져 한동안 영화 제작자도 모르는 장소가 됐다. 그렇다면 현재 타투인은 어떤 모습일까? 영화가 촬영된 지 거의 50년 세월이 흘렀지만 여전히 타투인은 그 곳 그 자리에 남아있다. 안타까운 점은 '잊혀진 도시', '버려진 도시' 라는 수식어가 붙을 만큼 사막의 모래바람에 덮혀 '멸망'할 위기에 놓여있다는 사실. 실제로 이는 과학적인 연구로도 증명됐다. 2년 전 미국 존스홉킨스 대학 물리학과 랄프 로젠즈 박사는 "초승달 모양의 사구(砂丘)가 매년 15m씩 이곳 세트장으로 확장 중” 이라면서 “몇 년 안에 이곳을 완전히 삼켜버릴 수 있다”는 연구결과를 발표한 바 있다. 이처럼 은하계 저멀리 기억으로 사라진 타투인이 최근들어 다시 조명되는 이유는 오는 17일 개봉 예정인 '스타워즈: 깨어난 포스'(Star Wars:The Force Awakens)와 맞물려 있다. 이에 전세계 스타워즈 광팬들은 영화 개봉을 기념해 이곳 타투인에 다시 모이는 계획도 추진 중이다. 박종익 기자 pji@seoul.co.kr

“화성(Mars)까지 보내는 데 돈이 얼마나 드나요?” 순진무구한 5살 영국 소년의 질문에 영국 우체국 ‘로얄메일’이 미국항공우주국(NASA)의 협조를 받아 성의 있는 답변을 한 것으로 알려져 화제가 되고 있다. 소식은 현지언론은 물론 미국과 호주 등 여러 외신에 소개될 정도로 주목을 받았다. 로얄메일에 따르면, 우선 화성까지 일반적인 편지 1장을 보내는 데 드는 비용은 1만 1602파운드 25펜스(약 2035만 원)다. 아쉽게도 이 질문을 한 소년 올리버 기딩스는 자신의 용돈만으로는 화성에 편지를 보낼 수 없을 것이다. 장래희망이 우주 비행사라고 밝힌 소년은 로얄메일 측에 감사의 편지를 보냈다고 한다. 그런데 이 우편 요금은 어떻게 계산한 것일까. 이에 대해 로얄메일 측은 “우선 화성까지의 유류비가 너무 많이 들어서 우편 요금에 영향이 클 수밖에 없다”고 답했다. 또한 “NASA는 이전에 화성에 큐리오시티 탐사로봇을 보낼 때 7억 달러(약 8127억 원) 정도가 들었다고 밝혔다”면서 “우주선 자체가 너무 작으므로 화물을 넣는 비용이 많이 드는 것”이라고 밝혔다. 로얄메일이 우주선의 무게와 화성에 가는 비용을 비교해 계산한 결과, 화물 100g당 운송 비용은 1만 8000달러(약 2089만 원)인 것으로 나타났다. 또한 편지 1장을 화성에 보낼 때 우표(국내 속달용 기준)로 산다면 이는 무려 1만 8416장분에 해당한다고 로얄메일 측은 설명했다. 사진=ⓒAFPBBNEWS=NEWS1 윤태희 기자 th20022@seoul.co.kr

It provides access to jobs and opportunities if you don‘t live in a good economy. 　The internet is so important that for every 10 people who gain internet access, about one person is lifted out of poverty and about one new job is created. 　Yet still more than half of the world’s population -- more than 4 billion people -- don‘t have access to the internet. 　If our generation connects them, we can lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. We can also help hundreds of millions of children get an education and save millions of lives by helping people avoid disease. 　This is another long term effort that can be advanced by technology and partnership. It will take inventing new technology to make the internet more affordable and bring access to unconnected areas. It will take partnering with governments, non-profits and companies. It will take engaging with communities to understand what they need. Good people will have different views on the best path forward, and we will try many efforts before we succeed. 　But together we can succeed and create a more equal world. 　• • • 　Technology can’t solve problems by itself. Building a better world starts with building strong and healthy communities. 　Children have the best opportunities when they can learn. And they learn best when they‘re healthy. 　Health starts early -- with loving family, good nutrition and a safe, stable environment. 　Children who face traumatic experiences early in life often develop less healthy minds and bodies. Studies show physical changes in brain development leading to lower cognitive ability. 　Your mother is a doctor and educator, and she has seen this firsthand. 　If you have an unhealthy childhood, it’s difficult to reach your full potential. 　If you have to wonder whether you‘ll have food or rent, or worry about abuse or crime, then it’s difficult to reach your full potential. 　If you fear you‘ll go to prison rather than college because of the color of your skin, or that your family will be deported because of your legal status, or that you may be a victim of violence because of your religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, then it’s difficult to reach your full potential. 　We need institutions that understand these issues are all connected. That‘s the philosophy of the new type of school your mother is building. 　By partnering with schools, health centers, parent groups and local governments, and by ensuring all children are well fed and cared for starting young, we can start to treat these inequities as connected. Only then can we collectively start to give everyone an equal opportunity. 　It will take many years to fully develop this model. But it’s another example of how advancing human potential and promoting equality are tightly linked. I will continue to serve as Facebook‘s CEO for many, many years to come, but these issues are too important to wait until you or we are older to begin this work. 포토그래퍼(Photographer) 강민진이 뉴욕에서 활발한 활동을 보여주며 순수예술사진 아티스트로서의 가능성을 인정받고 있다. 강민진은 지난 2011년 시카고 아트 인스티튜트 (The School of the Art Institute of Chicago) 대학교와 2014년 The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill을 졸업한 예술가다. 대학교, 대학원 전 과정 장학금을 받을 정도로 학교에서도 인정 받은 그는 미국에서 활동하며 지금까지 4개의 개인전과 15개의 단체전에 참가했고, 다수의 명망 높은 전시회에서 수상 이력을 세워 주목받았다. 올해 겨울 Aqua Art Miami 에 초대 받은 것을 시작으로 오는 2016년에도 뉴욕에 있는 The League residency at Vyt 에 A Ruth Katzman Scholarship 을 받고 아티스트 레지던시에 참가하는 등 활약을 이어갈 예정이다. 강민진은 작가 자신을 ‘모든 종류의 부재(Absence)를 탐구하는 사람’이라고 부른다. 이러한 작가의 성향을 가장 잘 보여주는 대표작이 바로 ‘Not part of sale’이다. 이 작품은 미국의 ‘estate sale‘ 문화를 사진에 담은 것이다. 미국에는 우리와는 사뭇 다른 ‘estate sale’이라는 문화가 있는데, 가족 중 누군가가 죽었을 때 집안의 물건을 정리하기 위해 고인의 물건을 판매하는 것을 말한다. 이는 죽은 사람의 물건을 함부로 사용하면 영혼이 따라온다고 믿어 쓰기를 꺼리는 한국인과 대비되는 모습이다. 작가는 미국인들이 ‘estate sale’을 벌이는 모습에 깊은 인상을 받고 사진으로 표현하기로 결심했다. 강민진 작가는 estate sale 전후 사진을 촬영하며 인간 삶의 무상함에 대해 이야기하고자 했다. 또 인간이 스스로 외양(visual appearance)을 선택할 수는 없지만, 집이나 옷, 물건 등에 주인의 모습이 어떻게 투영되는지를 보여주려고 한다. 이러한 예술가로서의 소질을 인정받아 2009년 시카고 아트 인스티튜트(School of the Art Institute of Chicago)에서 개최한 Merit and Academic Scholarship을 시작으로 △ Nippon Steel U.S.A, Presidential Awards Competition △ Artist Grant, Vermont Studio Center, 2014 △ Travel Award, UNC at Chapel hill, NC 등 다양한 어워드에 이름을 올렸다. 특히 Artist grant의 경우 미국 내 TOP3 안에 드는 레지던시 프로그램 vermont studio center에서 진행한다. 뉴욕서 활동 중인 대한민국 대표 순수예술사진 아티스트 강민진 홈페이지(www.minjinkang.com)를 방문하면 작가의 더 많은 작품을 만나볼 수 있다. 온라인뉴스부 iseoul@seoul.co.kr

최근 30년간 사망률이 가장 많이 증가한 암은 남성의 경우 전립선암(10배), 여성은 췌장암(4배)인 것으로 나타났다. 반면 위암은 남녀 모두에게서 사망률이 줄었다. 공주대 보건행정학과 임달오 교수팀은 1983년부터 2012년까지 30년간 국내 13개 주요 암의 사망률 추이를 분석해 이런 결과를 얻었다고 23일 밝혔다. 논문에 따르면 1983년 당시만 해도 우리나라 10만명당 암 사망률은 남성이 위암(83.5명), 간암(48.6명), 폐암(18.4명) 등의 순으로 높았고, 여성은 위암(23.1명), 간암(8.0명), 자궁암(7.2명) 순이었다. 하지만 30년이 흐른 2012년에는 남성이 폐암(44.4명), 간암(34.0명), 위암(22.4명)으로 변화했으며, 여성도 폐암(16.5명), 대장암(14.0명), 위암(13.0명) 순으로 암 사망률 순위가 바뀌었다. 통계자료를 1983년 대비 2012년의 연령별표준화사망률(ARS)로 분석하자 이번에는 전립선암 사망률이 급증한 것으로 나타났다. 연령표준화사망률은 연령구조를 국가 인구구조로 표준화해 인구 10만명당 연간 사망자 수를 산정한 개념이다. 분석 결과 남성은 전립선암이 30년간 10.5배가 늘어 암 사망 증가율 1위를 기록했고, 대장암(3.7배), 췌장암(2.9배) 순으로 암 사망 증가율이 늘었다. 연구팀은 전립선암 사망률이 급증한 배경으로 비만, 지방섭취, 운동부족 등을 꼽고 “전립선암에는 나라마다 경제개발 수준이 영향을 미쳤는데, 개발이 진행 중인 국가는 증가하고, 더 풍족한 국가는 감소하는 경향을 보였다”고 설명했다. 대장암과 췌장암 사망률 증가에 영향을 미친 요인 역시 서구형 식사, 과체중, 운동부족, 흡연 등이 꼽혔다. 한편 암 예방 조기 검진이 증가해 남성은 위암(-73.2%), 간암(-30.0%), 식도암(-26.8%) 순으로, 여성은 위암(-73.3%), 간암(-16.8%), 식도암(-63.0%) 순으로 암 사망률이 감소했다. 세종 이현정 기자 hjlee@seoul.co.kr
