무성한 갈기, 낮고 위협적인 울음소리 등은 주로 암사자가 아닌 수사자에게서 발견할 수 있는 특징이다. 하지만 최근 아프리카 평원에서 ‘수컷화’ 되어가는 암사자들의 모습이 포착돼 학계의 관심이 쏠리고 있다. 영국 BBC 다큐멘터리 프로그램인 ‘The World‘s Sneakiest Animals’ 제작진은 아프리카에서 자신을 수사자라고 여기는 암사자들의 모습을 최초로 카메라에 담는데 성공했다. 동식물학자인 크리스 팩햄 박사와 함께 진행된 이번 프로그램에 소개된 암사자들은 사파리 지역으로 유명한 남아프리카 보츠와나의 오카방고 델타에 서식한다. 이곳에 서식하는 일부 암사자들은 외모뿐만 아니라 울음소리나 행동 모두가 수사자와 매우 유사하다. 팩햄 박사에 따르면 이 지역에 서식하는 암사자는 총 5마리로, 이들은 모두 같은 유전적 돌연변이의 영향을 받은 것으로 추정된다. 유전적 영향으로 인한 호르몬의 불균형이 이들을 ‘수컷화’ 되게 한 것으로 보인다는 것이 팩햄 박사의 설명이다. 기본적인 유전적 영향뿐만 아니라 자신이 서식하는 지역을 다른 동물 무리로부터 지켜야 한다는 강한 열망 역시 이곳 암사자들을 수사자만큼 강한 존재가 되게 했다. 팩햄 박사는 “이들 암사자들은 자신의 생존 기회를 높이기 위해 가능하면 영역을 확장하려 할 것이다. 이러한 돌연변이적 변화는 다른 맹수나 적으로 하여금 이들을 진짜 수사자로 믿게끔 하는데 도움이 될 것”이라고 설명했다. 이어 “비록 지금은 이러한 암사자의 수가 많지 않지만 이러한 돌연변이적 진화가 야생에서 살아남는데 도움이 된다는 것이 확실해지면, 우리는 가까운 미래에 이러한 암사자 개체가 눈에 띄게 느는 것을 확인할 수 있을 것”이라고 덧붙였다. 한편 지금까지 관찰된 적 없는 암사자의 새로운 모습을 담은 다큐멘터리는 현지시간으로 25일 BBC에서 확인할 수 있다. 송혜민 기자 huimin0217@seoul.co.kr

머나먼 화성에서 임무수행 중인 미 항공우주국(NASA)의 탐사로봇 큐리오시티(Curiosity) 로버가 처음으로 지구 밖 사구(砂丘)의 모습을 촬영하는데 성공했다. 지난 11일(현지시간) NASA는 큐리오시티가 촬영한 화성 사구와 생생한 모래 확대 사진을 홈페이지를 통해 공개했다. 공개된 사진을 보면 전인미답의 화성 모래는 지구와 마찬가지로 물결처럼 바람에 흔들리는 모습이 눈에 띈다. 또한 확대된 모래 사진에는 일정한 크기의 고운 알갱이가 마치 보석처럼 빛나는 모습이 담겨있어 경외감마저 자아낸다. 이 사진은 지구시간으로 지난 5일, 화성시간으로 큐리오시티가 화성 탐사를 시작한지 1184솔(SOL·화성의 하루 단위. 1솔은 24시간 37분 23초로 지구보다 조금 더 길다)에 배그놀드(Bagnold Dunes)라 불리는 사구에서 촬영한 것이다. 샤프산 북서쪽 자락에 위치한 검은색 모래언덕인 배그놀드는 2층 빌딩 높이로 전체적으로 검은 색을 띄고있는 것이 특징이다. 특히 배그놀드는 아직도 ‘살아있는’ 상태로 화성 바람을 타고 지구시간으로 매년 1m 정도씩 움직인다. 지난달 말 이곳에 첫 바퀴를 굴린 큐리오시티는 팔에 장착된 ‘MAHLI’(Mars Hand Lens Imager)라는 특수 카메라로 화성 모래의 모습을 정밀하게 촬영했다. MAHLI는 폭 4cm 정도의 소형 카메라지만, 최고 12.5㎛의 세밀한 분해능을 가지고 있어 암석등 표면 구조를 연구하는 데 큰 역할을 한다. NASA 제트추진연구소 연구원이자 칼텍 공대 베타니 애흘만 박사는 “이번 탐사로 화성 사구의 구조와 성분에 대한 정보를 얻게될 것”이라면서 “과거 로버가 모래지대를 지나간 적은 있으나 이번같은 활동적인 사구는 아니었다” 고 설명했다. 한편 지구 달력으로 3년 전인 지난 2012년 8월 6일 우리 돈으로 2조 8000억 원을 들여 만든 큐리오시티는 무사히 이곳 화성에 착륙했다. 이후 성공적으로 탐사를 벌이고 있는 큐리오시티는 2년 8개월 만인 지난 4월 총 10km의 주행거리를 돌파했다. 현재 샤프산 기슭에 도착해 수개월 째 탐사중인 큐리오시티는 느릿느릿 움직이지만 소중한 정보를 지구로 전송하고 있다. 크레이터 중앙에 우뚝 선 샤프산은 침전물이 쌓여 형성된 것으로 추정되며 그 높이가 땅바닥을 기준으로 1만 8000피트(5,486m)에 달해 지구 최고봉인 에베레스트산(해수면 기준 8,848m)보다 실제로는 더 높다. 박종익 기자 pji@seoul.co.kr

“구해줘서 감사해요” 아일랜드의 한 홍수 피해 지역에서 구조된 당나귀 한 마리가 자신이 가까스로 살아났음을 아는 듯이 사람들을 향해 미소 짓는 모습이 공개돼 화제가 되고 있다. 아일랜드 동물보호단체 ‘AHAR’(Animal Heaven Animal Rescue)에 따르면, 지난 6일(현지시간) 아일랜드 킬러글린에서 홍수로 고립된 곳에 갇혀 있던 당나귀 한 마리가 자원봉사자들에 의해 구조됐다. 구조된 당나귀는 하루전 내린 폭우로 망가진 울타리에서 도망쳤다가 고립된 것으로 알려졌다. 당나귀는 다음날 조난자를 찾기 위한 수색 작업에서 자원 봉사자인 마이크 플레밍에 의해 처음 발견됐고 이후 사람들의 도움으로 구조될 수 있었다. 당시 구조 작업의 과정을 담은 카메라 속 당나귀는 놀랍게도 사람들을 향해 미소를 보였다. 그리고 그 미소를 본 사람들은 덩달아 웃고 말았다. 당나귀는 목숨을 건진 데 이어 마이크라는 새 이름까지 얻게 됐다. 당나귀를 구하는 데 큰 역할을 한 첫 발견자의 이름이 붙여진 것. 또 당나귀는 이번 물난리로 고생을 하긴 했지만 그가 평소 좋아하는 잘 말린 건초 더미를 선물로 받았다. 구조단체 측은 당나귀가 체력을 회복할 때까지 관리한 뒤 집으로 돌려보낼 예정이라고 밝혔다. 사진=AHAR/페이스북 윤태희 기자 th20022@seoul.co.kr

MBC 무한도전팀과 ‘하시마섬의 비밀’을 함께 제작하여 일본의 강제징용 사실을 널리 알린 한국 홍보 전문가 서경덕 성신여대 교수가 이번에는 ‘하시마의 숨겨진 진실’ 동영상을 제작하여 구글을 통해 전 세계에 광고를 시작했다고 7일 밝혔다. 이번 광고는 전 세계 네티즌들이 가장 많이 방문하는 검색 사이트인 구글을 통해 화면의 상하좌우 광고란에 ‘The Truth behind Hashima(하시마의 숨겨진 진실)’라는 제목 아래 ‘The Japanese governments distortion of historical fact must cease(일본 정부는 더 이상의 역사 왜곡을 중단해야만 한다)’를 노출해 클릭하면 유튜브의 동영상(http://is.gd/aqkLQh)으로 연결되는 방식이다. 5분 분량의 이번 영어 동영상은 하시마 등 일본의 ‘메이지 산업혁명 유산’이 유네스코 세계유산에 등재된 지 5개월이 지났지만 약속했던 ‘강제징용’에 대한 정보는 어디에서도 찾아볼 수 없다는 것을 강조하고 있다. 또한 동영상 안에는 사토 구니 일본 유네스코 대사의 공개 발언 및 기시다 후미오 일본 외무상의 외부 발언의 실제 영상을 삽입해 말 바꾸기와 역사 왜곡을 반복하는 일본 정부를 강하게 비판하고 있다. 특히 동영상 말미에는 최근 중국의 난징대학살 기록이 세계기록유산으로 등재되자 스가 요시히데 일본 관방장관이 유네스코 분담금의 지급정지를 언급하며 압력을 가한 사실을 넣어 국제사회로부터 비난받았던 점을 부각시켰다. 이번 광고를 기획한 서 교수는 “하시마 등이 유네스코 세계유산으로 등재될 때 ‘강제징용’에 대한 정보센터 설치 등을 약속해 놓고 등재 후의 새로운 나가사키시 안내서 발간 및 최근에 개관한 ‘군칸지마 디지털 뮤지엄’에서도 전혀 이행하지 않고 있다”고 전했다. 또한 서 교수는 “이런 일본 정부의 이중적인 모습을 구글의 광고를 통해 미국,일본,중국,호주,브라질,영국,남아공 등 전 세계 주요 10개국 네티즌들에게 널리 알려 세계적인 여론을 통해 일본 정부를 압박해 나가고 싶었다”고 덧붙였다. 이번 광고 비용은 치킨마루에서 전액 후원했으며 12월말까지 지속할 예정이다. 특히 청년시대,레드딕,디셀 등 젊은 청년 기업들이 동영상 제작을 위해 재능기부로 함께 참여했다. 이명선 전문기자 mslee@seoul.co.kr

다음은 저커버그가 딸 맥스에게 보낸 편지 전문이다. A letter to our daughter 　Dear Max, 　Your mother and I don‘t yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in. 　Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today. 　While headlines often focus on what‘s wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. Poverty is shrinking. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today. 　We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation. 　We believe all lives have equal value, and that includes the many more people who will live in future generations than live today. Our society has an obligation to invest now to improve the lives of all those coming into this world, not just those already here. 　But right now, we don’t always collectively direct our resources at the biggest opportunities and problems your generation will face. 　Consider disease. Today we spend about 50 times more as a society treating people who are sick than we invest in research so you won‘t get sick in the first place. 　Medicine has only been a real science for less than 100 years, and we’ve already seen complete cures for some diseases and good progress for others. As technology accelerates, we have a real shot at preventing, curing or managing all or most of the rest in the next 100 years. 　Today, most people die from five things -- heart disease, cancer, stroke, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases -- and we can make faster progress on these and other problems. 　Once we recognize that your generation and your children‘s generation may not have to suffer from disease, we collectively have a responsibility to tilt our investments a bit more towards the future to make this reality. Your mother and I want to do our part. 　Curing disease will take time. Over short periods of five or ten years, it may not seem like we’re making much of a difference. But over the long term, seeds planted now will grow, and one day, you or your children will see what we can only imagine: a world without suffering from disease. 　There are so many opportunities just like this. If society focuses more of its energy on these great challenges, we will leave your generation a much better world. • • • 　Our hopes for your generation focus on two ideas: advancing human potential and promoting equality. 　Advancing human potential is about pushing the boundaries on how great a human life can be. 　Can you learn and experience 100 times more than we do today? 　Can our generation cure disease so you live much longer and healthier lives? 　Can we connect the world so you have access to every idea, person and opportunity? 　Can we harness more clean energy so you can invent things we can‘t conceive of today while protecting the environment? 　Can we cultivate entrepreneurship so you can build any business and solve any challenge to grow peace and prosperity? 　Promoting equality is about making sure everyone has access to these opportunities -- regardless of the nation, families or circumstances they are born into. 　Our society must do this not only for justice or charity, but for the greatness of human progress. 　Today we are robbed of the potential so many have to offer. The only way to achieve our full potential is to channel the talents, ideas and contributions of every person in the world. 　Can our generation eliminate poverty and hunger? 　Can we provide everyone with basic healthcare? 　Can we build inclusive and welcoming communities? 　Can we nurture peaceful and understanding relationships between people of all nations? 　Can we truly empower everyone -- women, children, underrepresented minorities, immigrants and the unconnected? 　If our generation makes the right investments, the answer to each of these questions can be yes -- and hopefully within your lifetime. 　• • • 　This mission -- advancing human potential and promoting equality -- will require a new approach for all working towards these goals. 　We must make long term investments over 25, 50 or even 100 years. The greatest challenges require very long time horizons and cannot be solved by short term thinking. 　We must engage directly with the people we serve. We can’t empower people if we don‘t understand the needs and desires of their communities. 　We must build technology to make change. Many institutions invest money in these challenges, but most progress comes from productivity gains through innovation. 　We must participate in policy and advocacy to shape debates. Many institutions are unwilling to do this, but progress must be supported by movements to be sustainable. 　We must back the strongest and most independent leaders in each field. Partnering with experts is more effective for the mission than trying to lead efforts ourselves. 　We must take risks today to learn lessons for tomorrow. We’re early in our learning and many things we try won‘t work, but we’ll listen and learn and keep improving. 　• • • 　Our experience with personalized learning, internet access, and community education and health has shaped our philosophy. 　Our generation grew up in classrooms where we all learned the same things at the same pace regardless of our interests or needs. 　Your generation will set goals for what you want to become -- like an engineer, health worker, writer or community leader. You‘ll have technology that understands how you learn best and where you need to focus. You’ll advance quickly in subjects that interest you most, and get as much help as you need in your most challenging areas. You‘ll explore topics that aren’t even offered in schools today. Your teachers will also have better tools and data to help you achieve your goals. 　Even better, students around the world will be able to use personalized learning tools over the internet, even if they don‘t live near good schools. Of course it will take more than technology to give everyone a fair start in life, but personalized learning can be one scalable way to give all children a better education and more equal opportunity. 　We’re starting to build this technology now, and the results are already promising. Not only do students perform better on tests, but they gain the skills and confidence to learn anything they want. And this journey is just beginning. The technology and teaching will rapidly improve every year you‘re in school. 　Your mother and I have both taught students and we’ve seen what it takes to make this work. It will take working with the strongest leaders in education to help schools around the world adopt personalized learning. It will take engaging with communities, which is why we‘re starting in our San Francisco Bay Area community. It will take building new technology and trying new ideas. And it will take making mistakes and learning many lessons before achieving these goals. 　But once we understand the world we can create for your generation, we have a responsibility as a society to focus our investments on the future to make this reality. 　Together, we can do this. And when we do, personalized learning will not only help students in good schools, it will help provide more equal opportunity to anyone with an internet connection. 　• • • 　Many of the greatest opportunities for your generation will come from giving everyone access to the internet. 　People often think of the internet as just for entertainment or communication. But for the majority of people in the world, the internet can be a lifeline. 　It provides education if you don’t live near a good school. It provides health information on how to avoid diseases or raise healthy children if you don‘t live near a doctor. It provides financial services if you don’t live near a bank. It provides access to jobs and opportunities if you don‘t live in a good economy. 　The internet is so important that for every 10 people who gain internet access, about one person is lifted out of poverty and about one new job is created. 　Yet still more than half of the world’s population -- more than 4 billion people -- don‘t have access to the internet. 　If our generation connects them, we can lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. We can also help hundreds of millions of children get an education and save millions of lives by helping people avoid disease. 　This is another long term effort that can be advanced by technology and partnership. It will take inventing new technology to make the internet more affordable and bring access to unconnected areas. It will take partnering with governments, non-profits and companies. It will take engaging with communities to understand what they need. Good people will have different views on the best path forward, and we will try many efforts before we succeed. 　But together we can succeed and create a more equal world. 　• • • 　Technology can’t solve problems by itself. Building a better world starts with building strong and healthy communities. 　Children have the best opportunities when they can learn. And they learn best when they‘re healthy. 　Health starts early -- with loving family, good nutrition and a safe, stable environment. 　Children who face traumatic experiences early in life often develop less healthy minds and bodies. Studies show physical changes in brain development leading to lower cognitive ability. 　Your mother is a doctor and educator, and she has seen this firsthand. 　If you have an unhealthy childhood, it’s difficult to reach your full potential. 　If you have to wonder whether you‘ll have food or rent, or worry about abuse or crime, then it’s difficult to reach your full potential. 　If you fear you‘ll go to prison rather than college because of the color of your skin, or that your family will be deported because of your legal status, or that you may be a victim of violence because of your religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, then it’s difficult to reach your full potential. 　We need institutions that understand these issues are all connected. That‘s the philosophy of the new type of school your mother is building. 　By partnering with schools, health centers, parent groups and local governments, and by ensuring all children are well fed and cared for starting young, we can start to treat these inequities as connected. Only then can we collectively start to give everyone an equal opportunity. 　It will take many years to fully develop this model. But it’s another example of how advancing human potential and promoting equality are tightly linked. If we want either, we must first build inclusive and healthy communities. 　• • • 　For your generation to live in a better world, there is so much more our generation can do. 　Today your mother and I are committing to spend our lives doing our small part to help solve these challenges. I will continue to serve as Facebook‘s CEO for many, many years to come, but these issues are too important to wait until you or we are older to begin this work. By starting at a young age, we hope to see compounding benefits throughout our lives. 　As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities. 　We will give 99% of our Facebook shares -- currently about $45 billion -- during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues.
