내가 그의 이름을 불러주었을 때/그는 나에게로 와서/꽃이 되었다 출판사 갈무리에서 펴낸 ‘있음에서 함으로’(From Being to Doing)는 칠레의 인지생물학자로 ‘급진적 구성주의’의 시조로 꼽히는 움베르토 마투라나(78)와 독일 함부르크대 베른하르트 포에르크젠 교수의 대담을 실은 책이다. 마투라나는 그의 독특한 생물학 연구로, 우리 귀에도 익숙한 프리초프 카프라·일리야 프리고진 같은 물리학자들뿐 아니라 철학에도 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 대담을 읽다 보면 포스트모던류의 책 같다. 김춘수의 시구로 돌아가자면, 내가 그를 불러주었을 때(Doing) 비로소 그는 나에게 와서는 꽃(Being)이 된다. 존재란 저기 혼자 멀리 떨어져 있는 게 아니라, 내가 그를 알아보고 불렀을 때부터 비로소 존재하기 시작한다. 그런데 부르는 방식은, 언어의 제약이 있다지만 사람에 따라 천차만별이다. 그렇다면 존재도, 그것을 알아보고 부르는 사람에 따라 천차만별일 수 밖에 없다. 간단한 원리인 것 같은데, 여기서 생각의 가지는 쭉쭉 뻗어나간다. 이 원리에 따르면 ‘무엇(의 존재)을 안다.’는 것은 사실 ‘안다고 믿는 것’에 지나지 않는다.‘안다.’는 사람은 자기가 아는 것을 남들도 알아야 행복하다며 윽박지르기 일쑤지만,‘안다고 믿는’ 사람은 다른 사람들은 행복이 무엇이라 믿는지 존중하게 된다. 여기서 사랑이, 동지애와 인류애가 시작된다. 그가 자신의 학문을 ‘사랑의 생물학’이라 부르는 까닭이다. 나의 앎을 강요하지 않고 서로의 앎을 존중해줄 때, 그래서 서로를 애틋하게 불러낼 수 있을 때 새로운 세상은 열린다는 것. 여기서 다시 김춘수가 등장한다.누가 나의 이름을 불러다오/그에게로 가서 나도/그의 꽃이 되고 싶다 대담 형식인 데다 대담자인 포에르크젠 교수가 적절한 때에 적절한 질문을 던지고 있어 아주 쉽게 읽힌다는 게 무엇보다 큰 장점이다.1만 4000원. 조태성기자 cho1904@seoul.co.kr
