‘두바이의 블랙 프라이데이’로 불리는 ‘두바이 서머 서프라이즈’가 오는 8월 31일까지 두바이 전역에서 펼쳐진다. 올해 두바이 서머 서프라이즈는 28년 역사상 가장 큰 규모로 두바이 시민과 전 세계 방문객들에게 파격적인 할인 혜택과 경품을 제공한다. 이번 축제에는 두바이 전역의 쇼핑몰, 호텔, 레스토랑이 참여해 최대 90% 할인, 반짝 세일, 캐시백 등 다양한 행사를 진행한다. 오프라인 매장뿐만 아니라 온라인 쇼핑몰에서도 전자기기, 패션, 화장품 등 다양한 제품을 할인된 가격에 만나볼 수 있다. 아울러 200디르함(약 7만5000원) 이상 구매 시 SUV 차량 경품 추첨, 1000디르함(약 37만5000원) 이상 구매 시 골드바 증정 이벤트에 참여할 수 있는 등 총 2000만디르함(약 75억원) 상당의 경품이 쏟아진다. 올해는 특별히 다양한 체험 행사도 준비되어 있다. 커피와 음악을 결합한 감성 팝업 이벤트 ‘가와 비츠’는 축제 기간 매주 토요일 진행된다. 디지털 아트 극장(TODA), 스카이 뷰 전망대, 두바이 아이스 링크, 록시 시네마, 딥 다이브 두바이 등 두바이 관광 명소에서 현지 유행곡을 듣고 다양한 커피를 시음할 수 있다. 이번 축제의 하이라이트인 ‘모디쉬 스플래시 파크’는 가족 친화형 물놀이장이다. 내달 31일까지 매일 운영되는 물놀이장에는 다양한 놀이기구가 설치될 예정이며 입장료는 무료다. ‘10디르함 디쉬’ 행사에서는 중동 최고의 미식 도시인 두바이의 수백 개 레스토랑이 자랑하는 대표 메뉴를 단돈 10디르함(약 3800원)에 맛볼 수 있다. 길거리 음식부터 글로벌 인기 요리까지 다양한 메뉴를 저렴한 가격에 제공해 가성비를 중시하는 여행객에게 안성맞춤이다.

‘나’와 ‘너’의 인칭을 무화(無化)하는 강렬한 죽음의 시학. 시인 김혜순(70)이 펼친 시 세계가 콧대 높은 독일문학의 한가운데에서 그 문학성을 인정받았다. 김혜순 시인의 시집 ‘죽음의 자서전’(독일어판 제목 Autobiographie des Todes)이 17일(현지시간) 독일 베를린에 있는 연방 공공기관 ‘세계 문화의 집’(HKW)이 수여하는 국제문학상을 받았다. 한국문학 최초다. 시인이자 번역가로 독일 힐데스하임대 철학과 조교수로 일하는 한국인 박술과 독일인 시인 울리아나 볼프가 시집을 독일어로 옮겼다. 심사위원단은 “김혜순 시의 경이로움은 수수께끼 속에서 그 진정한 의미가 드러나곤 한다”면서 “리듬을 따라서 반복해서 읽다 보면 텍스트가 열리며 그 방향에 따라 이미지도 함께 드러난다”고 평했다. 1979년 ‘문학과지성’을 통해 시인으로 등단한 김혜순은 폭발적인 전위와 정치적 급진성으로 독자적인 문학세계를 구축했다. 본격적인 활동을 시작한 1980년대 이후로도 꾸준히 시의 탄성을 잃지 않으며 만년에 이를수록 더욱 뚜렷하고 높은 문학적 성취를 이뤄가고 있는 몇 안 되는 시인 중 하나다. 지난해에는 시집 ‘날개환상통’의 영문판이 전미도서비평가협회상을 받기도 했다. 이 역시 한국문학 최초의 성과다. 김혜순은 최근 독일, 영국 등 유럽 순방을 마치고 귀국한 것으로 알려졌다. 2023년 독일 베를린에서 열린 시 페스티벌에 초청된 김혜순 시인은 ‘혀 없는 모국어’라는 제목의 연설문을 낭독한 바 있다. 독일의 유력 문학 출판사인 피셔와 좋은 조건으로 계약했고, 올해 초 번역본이 현지에서 출간됐다. 박술은 지난해 서울신문과의 인터뷰에서 “한국문학이 이렇게 주목받은 건 처음”이었다며 “독일문학 세기의 명연설로 꼽히는 파울 첼란의 1960년 뷔히너상 수상연설인 ‘자오선’에 비긴다고 현지 언론이 말할 정도였다”고 치켜세운 바 있다. 김혜순은 2023년에 이어 지난달에도 이 축제에 초대받은 바 있다. 지난 4월에는 미국 예술·과학아카데미(AAAS) 회원으로 선출되기도 했다. HKW는 독일 연방 총리실 산하 공공기관이다. 2009년 시상을 시작한 HKW 국제문학상은 비유럽 국가의 예술을 독일어권에 소개하는 데 중점을 두고 있다. 프랑스 엘렌 식수, 중국 찬쉐 등이 이 상의 최종후보에 올랐다. 지난해 노벨문학상을 받은 한강의 ‘채식주의자’ 독일어판도 2017년 이 상 후보에 오른 바 있다. 독일 문단에서도 인지도가 있는 상으로 작가와 번역가에게 상을 함께 준다. 상금은 3만 5000유로(약 5400만원)로 작가에게 2만 유로, 번역가에게 1만 5000유로가 주어진다.
