국내 연구진이 혈액 대신 땀으로 혈당 농도를 측정할 수 있는 기술을 개발했다. 11일 포항공대(POSTECH)는 신소재공학과·융합대학원 한세광 교수, 신소재공학과 정선아·김태연 연구팀이 ㈜인핸드플러스 연구팀과 함께 땀 속 혈당 농도를 정확하게 측정할 수 있는 기술을 개발했다고 밝혔다. 당뇨는 관리를 위해 꾸준한 혈당 측정이 필수다. 하지만 매일 피를 뽑아 확인하는 것이 부담스럽고, 비침습적 센서의 경우 짧은 기간에 사용 성능이 떨어지는 등 단점이 있다. 이에 연구진은 ‘땀’을 이용한 비침습적 혈당 측정에 주목했다. ▲땀의 흐름을 한 방향으로 제어하는 ‘테슬라 밸브(Tesla valve1)’ 기반 마이크로 유체 시스템 ▲마이크로 LED 및 광센서(photodetector2)로 구성된 광학 모듈 ▲혈당에 반응하는 광학 하이드로젤을 결합해 스마트 워치 형태의 혈당 측정 시스템을 완성했다. 땀이 센서에 닿으면 혈당에 따라 형광 신호를 발생시키고, LED와 광센서가 이 신호를 전자 신호로 변환한다. 변환된 형광 세기를 통해 실시간으로 혈당 수치를 확인할 수 있다. 혈당 뿐만 아니라 산소 농도, 심박수까지 확인할 수 있다. 이를 통해 땀에 포함된 0.01~1mM(밀리몰) 수준의 혈당까지 정확하게 측정할 수 있다. 30일 이상 장기 사용에도 민감도가 변하지 않고, 실제 혈당 수치와 높은 상관성을 보여 신뢰성을 입증했다. 연구를 이끈 한세광 교수는 “스마트 워치와 결합된 광학 기반 연속 혈당 측정 시스템은 혈당 측정을 더 쉽고 편리하게 만들고, 당뇨 환자들의 불편함을 줄일 수 있을 것”이라며 “당뇨뿐만 아니라 다양한 만성 질환 모니터링에도 적용 가능해 활용 잠재력이 높다”고 설명했다.

프렌치 불독 믹스견 ‘페튜니아’(Petunia)가 8일(현지시간) 미국 캘리포니아주(州) 산타로사에서 열린 ‘세계에서 가장 못생긴 개 선발대회’(World’s Ugliest Dog Contest)에서 1위를 차지했다. 올해 2살로 털이 잘 나지 않는 무모(無毛) 특성을 가진 페튜니아는 오리건주에 사는 주인 섀넌 나이먼과 함께 무대에 올랐다. 나이먼은 “털이 없는 페튜니아의 피부 건강을 위해 매일 코코넛 오일과 자외선 차단제를 발라준다”며 특별 관리법을 소개했고, 페튜니아를 “세상에서 가장 포근하게 안기는 강아지”(world-class snuggler)라고 자랑했다. 우승자 페튜니아에게는 상금 5000달러(약 696만원)가 수여되며, 오는 11일 NBC 인기 모닝쇼 ‘투데이 쇼’(TODAY Show)에 출연해 시청자들에게 매력을 뽐낼 예정이다. 2위는 퍼그견 ‘지니 루’(Jinny Lu)가 차지했다. 1971년 한 시민의 제안으로 시작된 이 독특한 대회는 반려견의 혈통이나 외모가 아닌, 그 개만이 가진 개성과 매력을 기념하는 자리다. 주최 측인 소노마-마린 박람회(Sonoma-Marin Fair)는 대회 홈페이지를 통해 “지난 50년 동안 다양한 견종과 크기의 개들이 지닌 특별한 ‘불완전함’을 기념해 왔다”며 “대회 목적은 ‘못생긴’ 개를 놀리는 것이 아니라, 이들이 얼마나 아름다운지 세상에 알리는 데 있다”고 밝혔다. 대회에는 치아가 없는 개, 혀가 늘어져 있는 개, 털이 듬성듬성한 개, 눈이 없는 개, 다리가 기형인 개 등 독특한 외모를 참가자들이 무대에 오른다. 참가견 상당수는 유기견 보호소나 강아지 공장에서 구조된 반려견으로, 행사는 구매보다 입양을 통한 반려 문화 확산에도 의미를 두고 있다. 지난해 우승견은 미국 오리건주 노스벤드 출신의 8세 페키니즈 ‘와일드 탕(Wild Thang)’으로, 어린 시절 앓은 홍역 때문에 치아가 제대로 자라지 않아 혀가 항상 밖으로 나와 있는 것이 특징이었다.
