A Journey Halfway Around the World for a Second Chance at Life: A Daughter’s Gift Saves Her Father in South Korea At 69, a Peruvian-American philanthropist who spent his life helping the vulnerable faced a devastating diagnosis. A 17-hour liver transplant, made possible by his daughter and a team of South Korean surgeons, gave him a chance to return to the people who still needed him. “There is still so much left for me to do for the people of my country who have been forgotten.” For much of his life, Marco Antonio Quiros, 69, had devoted himself to people who had little reason to expect help from anyone else. A philanthropist and businessman who divided his time between the United States and Peru, he used the proceeds from his real estate and construction ventures to support elderly people in nursing homes, low-income families and children battling serious illnesses. Wherever suffering went unanswered, he tried to offer a helping hand. Giving had become the defining purpose of his life. Then, in an unexpected turn, he found himself in desperate need of the very thing he had spent decades offering others: a chance. His ordeal began in 2008, when he underwent gallbladder surgery in Peru. During the procedure, doctors discovered signs of fatty liver disease. Because he neither drank alcohol nor smoked, his doctors suspected a genetic predisposition. His physician in the United States did not consider the condition severe enough to require immediate treatment, and Quiros returned to his ordinary life. For years, there was little to suggest how dramatically his health would deteriorate. Then, in September 2025, he noticed that his abdomen was growing increasingly swollen. A visit to a hospital in Peru revealed that fluid was accumulating in his abdomen, a condition known as ascites, and that his fatty liver disease had progressed to liver fibrosis. By February 2026, his condition had worsened considerably. Breathing had become difficult. Fluid had accumulated not only in his abdomen but also around his lungs, and his liver had hardened from years of progressive damage. Doctors diagnosed him with end-stage cirrhosis. Without a liver transplant, there was little hope of survival. His failing liver also placed his kidneys at serious risk. For a man who had spent his life trying to ease the suffering of others, the prospect of losing his own life was devastating. Yet the obstacles to treatment seemed insurmountable. In Peru, liver transplantation was restricted by an age limit of 65, leaving Quiros, at 69, ineligible for the procedure. In the United States, a transplant was technically possible, but he faced the prospect of waiting more than a year on the list for a deceased-donor liver, with no guarantee that an organ would become available in time. The thought of waiting for someone else to die before he could live was a particularly painful one. Then, in the midst of his despair, Quiros began searching the internet for another way forward. That was when he discovered living-donor liver transplantation, a procedure in which a healthy person donates a portion of the liver to someone whose own liver can no longer function. Because the liver can regenerate, both donor and recipient can recover after the operation. The more he researched his options, the more convinced he became that South Korea offered the expertise and experience he needed. His search led him to Asan Medical Center in Seoul, a hospital internationally recognized for its liver transplantation program. Since performing its first liver transplant in 1992, the hospital has steadily expanded its experience in one of the most demanding fields of surgery. In early 2025, it became the first medical institution in the world to perform 9,000 liver transplants. It now carries out approximately 500 such operations annually. Its experience with living-donor transplantation was especially important to Quiros. The hospital reported a donor mortality rate of zero percent in its living-donor liver transplant program. For Quiros, the decision became clear. “The best doctors were in Korea,” he came to believe. “Korea was my only option.” At the end of May, he and his family boarded a flight that carried them roughly 10,000 kilometers to Seoul. He arrived at Asan Medical Center on May 28 and began a series of detailed examinations to determine whether a transplant could be performed safely. The answer, ultimately, would come from within his own family. His daughter, Kimberly Lucia Quiros, 30, volunteered to donate a portion of her liver to save her father. The medical team carefully assessed her health, her willingness to donate and the physical compatibility between father and daughter. After reviewing their respective conditions and calculating the volume of liver that could be safely transplanted, the doctors determined that her donation could provide her father with sufficient liver tissue. On the morning of Aug. 14, at 8 a.m., two operating rooms came to life. Father and daughter were wheeled in for separate but intimately connected operations. One would give a portion of her liver. The other would receive it. A Daughter’s Gift, and a Surgeon’s Race Against Time Kimberly’s donor operation was led by Song Ki-won, a professor of liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at Asan Medical Center. The surgical team removed the right lobe of her liver using a minimally invasive technique that required an abdominal incision of less than 10 centimeters. The approach was intended to reduce the size of the scar and minimize the risk of complications for the young donor. Her father’s operation, however, proved far more complicated than anticipated. The transplant was led by Lee Seung-gyu, an endowed professor, and Moon Deok-bok, both specialists in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery. Years of cirrhosis had severely altered the anatomy of Quiros’s liver and the blood vessels surrounding it. Pressure within the liver’s blood vessels had risen dramatically, and a dense network of abnormal collateral vessels had developed around them. These fragile vessels had become tangled in a web that made the operation particularly hazardous. There was another, potentially fatal complication: part of his hardened liver had grown tightly around the inferior vena cava, the body‘s largest vein, which returns blood from the lower body to the heart. Removing the diseased liver without first addressing this obstruction could have interrupted blood flow to vital organs. The resulting congestion and swelling could have threatened the intestines, kidneys and pancreas, turning an already difficult transplant into a life-threatening emergency. The surgeons faced a problem that demanded not only technical precision but careful planning. Lee first worked to separate the complicated network of blood vessels. The team then established a bypass route to allow blood to continue circulating safely while the diseased liver was removed. Only after this alternative pathway had been secured could Moon carefully dissect the hardened liver from the surrounding vessels. The surgeons then connected Kimberly’s donated liver to the appropriate blood vessels, restoring the circulation needed for the transplanted organ to function. The operation had begun early that morning. Seventeen hours later, after an extraordinary test of surgical skill and endurance, the transplant was complete. It had succeeded. For Quiros, the outcome meant far more than the replacement of a failing organ. It meant the possibility of returning to a life he had feared was slipping away — and to the people he believed were still counting on him. Recovery, and the Work That Still Lies Ahead Father and daughter began recovering after surgery. Kimberly was discharged eight days later. Her father’s recovery took longer, as expected after such a complex procedure, but he continued to improve under the care of the hospital’s medical team. Three weeks after the operation, Quiros was well enough to leave the hospital. For the surgeons, the case illustrated both the possibilities of living-donor liver transplantation and the formidable challenges that can accompany advanced liver disease. Lee said the hospital had recently treated two brothers who traveled from Morocco with their father, who had liver cancer, seeking treatment in South Korea. The successful operation for Quiros and his daughter represented another instance in which patients from far beyond the country’s borders had turned to Korean medicine in a moment of extreme vulnerability. “Asan Medical Center has become a destination of last hope for patients around the world facing end-stage liver failure or liver cancer,” Lee said. “That recognition carries a profound responsibility. We will continue to do everything we can to help patients from across the world find a new chance at life here.” Moon said the operation had required an unusually long time because the hardened liver was tightly wrapped around the inferior vena cava. “The risks of massive bleeding and air embolism were considerable,” he said. “But we were able to overcome these challenges because we had carefully established a portal vein-to-vena cava bypass route in advance.” He added that he sincerely hoped Quiros would continue to enjoy good health after returning home. “I Thought My Life Was Coming to an End” As his discharge approached, Quiros struggled to put his gratitude into words. Earlier in the year, when fluid had accumulated around his lungs and he could barely breathe, he had believed his life was nearing its end. The journey to South Korea had begun as a desperate search for a possibility that seemed increasingly remote. Instead, it had brought him back from the brink. “At the beginning of this year, when fluid was building up in my lungs and I could hardly breathe, I thought my life was coming to an end,” he said. “With only the faintest hope left, I traveled halfway around the world to a country that was unfamiliar to me. Here in Korea, I received what feels like a miraculous gift of life.” For Quiros, however, survival was not the end of the story. His thoughts had already turned to Peru, where the elderly, poor families and sick children he had supported for years continued to face hardship. “There are still so many people in my country who are suffering in poverty, and there is so much more I have to do for the world,” he said. “I am deeply happy to have been given this precious opportunity to breathe again and continue serving others. With this new life I have received in Korea, and with all the strength I have, I will return to caring for the many people in my country who need help.” His words gave the operation a meaning beyond its medical success. A daughter had given her father a portion of her own liver. Surgeons had spent 17 hours navigating some of the most dangerous complications of advanced liver disease. And a man who had spent decades giving others hope had been given the chance to carry on. For Quiros, the gift of life was inseparable from the work that still lay ahead. After completing his remaining outpatient appointments and final examinations, he was scheduled to return to the United States on Thursday, Aug. 29, carrying memories of a country he had crossed an ocean to reach — and the possibility of returning to Peru to continue the work that had defined his life.

‘위키드’에는 ‘중력을 넘어서’(Defying Gravity), ‘파퓰러’(Popular), ‘단 하루’(One Short Day), ‘비극의 시작’(No Good Deed), ‘널 만났기에’(For Good) 등 인기 넘버가 수두룩하다. (No One Mourns the Wicked)와 ‘그 소녀는 내가 아냐’(I’m Not That Girl)는 상황이 변하면서 가사의 의미가 다르게 전달되는 묘미가 있다.

‘위키드’에는 ‘중력을 넘어서’(Defying Gravity), ‘파퓰러’(Popular), ‘단 하루’(One Short Day), ‘마법사와 나’(Wizard and I), ‘비극의 시작’(No Good Deed), ‘널 만났기에’(For Good) 등 인기 넘버가 수두룩하다. (No One Mourns the Wicked)와 ‘그 소녀는 내가 아냐’(I’m Not That Girl)는 상황이 변하면서 가사의 의미가 다르게 전달된다.

Shattered ‘Korean Dream’… Overlooked suicides of Nepali migrant workers in S Korea

[The 2019 Migrant Report]In the past 10 years(2009-2018), 43 people out of 143 Nepali migrants who died in South Korea took their own lives- meaning 3 out of 10 deaths involved suicides. The Seoul Shinmun confirmed the figure through the Embassy of Nepal in Seoul and found out most of the cases involved migrant workers who entered the country with E-9 visa. Yet, a bigger tragedy lurks behind their unsung deaths as neither the Government of South Korea nor the Government of Nepal pays much attention to these recurring problems. In 2018, Nepal sent the largest number of non-professional or low-skilled migrant workers(8,404) to South Korea. Obviously, they come to this country for the so-called ‘Korean Dream’. But then, why did so many of them have to die on South Korean soil? From August 26th to September 2nd, the Seoul Shinmun met with some forty people in cities throughout Nepal -such as Kathmandu, Dong Kharka and Pokhara. These people included family members of migrant workers as well as Nepali youths who were dreaming of coming to South Korea to work one day. Three Stories of Betrayed Korean Dreams #Kedar Timalsina(28) An adult-size coffin wrapped with cardboard boxes and plastic tapes was carried out of the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Inside the coffin lay a 28-year-old man named Kedar Timalsina. When his body was found around midnight on July 20th in Saha District, Busan, he was already dead as he apparently hanged himself in the storage of a seafood processing factory. Waiting for him at the airport arrival site were some men from Kedar’s family. “This paper doesn‘t say anything about why Kedar killed himself,” they mumbled among themselves while sifting through the pages of the simple document sent from South Korean police. Kedar’s family said they did not understand why he had to make such an extreme choice to kill himself. It had been only 25 days since his wife Bandana Timalsina gave birth to their first son. The newborn looked like his father. “You know, I even heard Kedar threw a big party to celebrate the birth of this baby. Why would such a man kill himself? It doesn’t make any sense,” said Bandana’s older brother. Besides, Kedar had an aging mother who just turned 60 and would need his care more than before. What further frustrated the grieving family was the abhorring silence and indifference. Neither South Korea nor Nepal provided an adequate explanation. The Embassy of Nepal in Seoul and South Korean police seemed they were done with the case since they had returned the body to his family. South Korean police never investigated surveillance cameras installed in the factory or carried out forensics on Kedar’s mobile phone. The police said, “We found no evidence of murder on his body. Moreover, we understand he had a clear motivation to commit suicide.” “How can they not even review the CCTV and mobile phone? Is this how South Korea handles things?” Bandana‘s older brother asked a Korean reporter sitting in front of them. According to South Korean police, on the other hand, Kedar’s family was the “clear motivation” behind his suicide. Citing a statement made by Kedar’s co-worker, the police explained that Kedar had recently purchased some land, which turned out to be a fraud. “It’s a lie!” Listening to the Korean reporter relaying what he had heard from the police, Kedar’s family got furious. They insisted, “He bought the land a year ago for 2.90 million rupees (roughly 30 million Korean won) but now the price has gone up to 4.35 million rupees (roughly 43.5 million Korean won).” None of Kedar’s personal belongings were returned to his family. The police said, ”The Nepali Embassy told us that his family did not want his items back.“ The family‘s account was different. They said they had never communicated with the Embassy about Kedar’s personal belongings. ”We are responsible for confirming the identity and death certificate in order to promptly return the body back to his family in Nepal. The Embassy does not send back items unless they are important,“ the Embassy of Nepal replied when asked about it. On the day of the arrival, the family took Kedar’s body to the Bagmati River, an important tributary of the Ganges. When Bandana opened the cover of the coffin to see her husband for the last time, she burst into tears caressing his face. ”Why… What should I do with our baby?“ Kedar’s family moistened his mouth with water from the Ganges and put fire into the mouth to cremate. It took 4 hours for the fire to consume his body. With Kedar’s ‘Korean Dream’, all was gone.# Bal Bahadur Gurung(32) ”He really loved the children. These kids remind me of my husband every time I see them,“ said Lili Maya Gurung(28) thrusting a tissue under her sunglasses. The Seoul Shinmun met her in Pokhara in central Nepal. Lili Maya‘s husband Bal Bahadur Gurung forced himself off the Wolleung Bridge in Jungnang District, Seoul, on June 12th, 2018. He died immediately after being hit by a passing vehicle. CCTV footage showed Bal Bahadur walking back-and-forth over the bridge several times. He seemed nervous. He hesitated. But nothing would change the fact that he had just become an ‘unregistered’ migrant two days ago. He feared deportation. Bal Bahadur entered South Korea with a proper work visa in October 2017. In the following March, however, he left the company and registered himself at the Ministry of Labor to find another work. Migrant workers automatically lose their right to stay in the country if they fail to secure employment within three months. Bal Bahadur went back to Nepal to spend a short time with his family then came back to South Korea. Unfortunately, he had no luck in finding work. Time marched on inexorably until his three months were up. He became an unregistered or illegal migrant. That night, Bal Bahadur had no money. Later, a message found on his mobile phone showed that he had been trying to borrow some money from his co-worker. ”Had he owned some money, do you think he could have been able to get a taxi to go home in Suwon and lived?“ Lili Maya came to South Korea to take care of the remains of her husband by herself. “Unfortunately, many people in Nepal can’t afford to come to Korea even if a family member dies here. Still, the Nepali Embassy does nothing about it,” sighed another Nepali, Lama Dawa Pasang(43), who had been helping Lili Maya during her visit. Lili Maya’s neighbors often ask her, “Your husband looked so happy when he was visiting you two months before he passed away. What happened to that happy man? What happened in South Korea?” Shocked by his youngest son’s tragic death, Bal Bahadur’s father -a former soldier- is suffering from amnesia. In Nepal, when a family member dies, they make an altar at home to display a photo of the deceased and burn incense every morning and evening. ”Mom, we only do this for dead people. Did Daddy die?“ Lili Maya’s seven-year-old daughter asked. “No, your father has gone abroad to work,” replied Lili Maya. But that did not stop Lili Maya from crying. “I want to die, too. But when I think of these poor children, I can’t.”# Dhan Raj Ghala(40) “I am enocent. I have no mistake. Company cheating me. I am no crazy […] company take my signiture [...] please investigation please” This is part of Dhan Raj Ghala’s letter, hand-written in English. He apparently died as a result of a suicide by hanging in June 2011 while working at a futon factory in Dalseo District, Daegu City. Dhan, who first came to South Korea in September 2010, even had a plane ticket booked to go back to Nepal. But, for some reason, he still ended up with the same tragic choice. Upon seeing a Korean reporter on August 31st in their home in Pokhara, Dhan’s wife Man Maya Ghala(48) and Dhan’s younger brother Bhim Raj Ghala(36) began talking about what had happened 8 years ago. Bhim said he had to go to South Korea because he could not let his brother go without knowing why he had to die there. To Bhim, his older brother was a man who loved his family more than anything and a hard-working person. “After seeing the letters, I thought Dhan must have been bullied at work,” Bhim explained. “He could have suffered from depression after learning he had signed something without knowing what it was. In the letter, he was worried that the company did something bad.” Dhan left another short letter written in Nepali, as well. He wrote, “I’ve done nothing wrong. I once fought with another worker from Mongolia. I don’t know what that Mongolian guy told Korean people… (The company) is cheating me.” Similar letters had also been sent twice to a manager of the company, in which Dhan wrote, “We used to talk to each other. But you don’t talk to me these days. I don’t understand. Please tell me why.” The company, however, denied the claims made by Dhan. They insisted that there was no bullying and that Dhan had never signed any document. It’s been told Dhan found Korea’s alternating shifts between day and night extremely difficult. Since mid-April, Dhan had been only given night shift for two months until his death. “My husband told me he could not sleep when he was working night shifts,” Man Maya explained. A source at a labor union said, “Dhan could have been very stressed due to night shifts and workplace bullying. When the company sounded as if they were to fire him, he must have felt extremely pressured.” In Nepal, when fathers bring gifts from overseas, they share it with neighbors. “When my children received their portion, they looked rather sad. They must have thought of their late-father,” Man Maya’s voice trembled as she recalled how it wounded her children. Her daughter and son were ten and five, respectively, at the time of their father’s death. Now they’ve grown to become a college student and a middle school student. ”I will never forgive those people who did wrong things to my father,“ Dhan‘s son vows to take revenge whenever the absence of his father strikes him. The siblings made a promise to each other not to go abroad no matter what. Nevertheless, Man Maya and Bhim said they did not hate Koreans. “You see in South Korea, as well as in Nepal, there are good people and bad people. Sadly, my husband met bad people. I don’t want to blame all Koreans because of them. Still, I want those bad ones to be punished.” Kathmandu·Dong kharka·Pokhara Ki Mindo key5088@seoul.co.krEnglish Translation: Lee Myungju ana.myungjulee@gmail.com ▶The Seoul Shinmun plans to cover more in-depth stories involving migrant workers, marriage migrants and migrant children in South Korea.

(I’m Not The Only One)을 불렀다. (I Sing Because I’m Happy)에서는 분위기가 또 바뀌었다. (Writing’s on the Wall) 등 잔잔한 곡에서는 압도적인 가창력을 뽐냈고 ‘머니 온 마이 마인드’(Money on My Mind), ‘라이크 아이 캔’(Like I Can) 등 밝은 분위기의 노래를 부를 때는 귀여운 율동도 보여주면서 공연을 즐겼다. 이정수 기자 tintin@seoul.co.kr

(Beast is feeling the red, white and blue. Happy 4th everyone!) 박종익 기자 pji@seoul.co.kr

송한수 기자 onekor@seoul.co.kr

A letter to our daughter Dear Max, Your mother and I don‘t yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in. Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today. While headlines often focus on what‘s wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. Poverty is shrinking. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today. We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation. We believe all lives have equal value, and that includes the many more people who will live in future generations than live today. Our society has an obligation to invest now to improve the lives of all those coming into this world, not just those already here. But right now, we don’t always collectively direct our resources at the biggest opportunities and problems your generation will face. Consider disease. Today we spend about 50 times more as a society treating people who are sick than we invest in research so you won‘t get sick in the first place. Medicine has only been a real science for less than 100 years, and we’ve already seen complete cures for some diseases and good progress for others. As technology accelerates, we have a real shot at preventing, curing or managing all or most of the rest in the next 100 years. Today, most people die from five things -- heart disease, cancer, stroke, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases -- and we can make faster progress on these and other problems. Once we recognize that your generation and your children‘s generation may not have to suffer from disease, we collectively have a responsibility to tilt our investments a bit more towards the future to make this reality. Your mother and I want to do our part. Curing disease will take time. Over short periods of five or ten years, it may not seem like we’re making much of a difference. But over the long term, seeds planted now will grow, and one day, you or your children will see what we can only imagine: a world without suffering from disease. There are so many opportunities just like this. If society focuses more of its energy on these great challenges, we will leave your generation a much better world. • • • Our hopes for your generation focus on two ideas: advancing human potential and promoting equality. Advancing human potential is about pushing the boundaries on how great a human life can be. Can you learn and experience 100 times more than we do today? Can our generation cure disease so you live much longer and healthier lives? Can we connect the world so you have access to every idea, person and opportunity? Can we harness more clean energy so you can invent things we can‘t conceive of today while protecting the environment? Can we cultivate entrepreneurship so you can build any business and solve any challenge to grow peace and prosperity? Promoting equality is about making sure everyone has access to these opportunities -- regardless of the nation, families or circumstances they are born into. Our society must do this not only for justice or charity, but for the greatness of human progress. Today we are robbed of the potential so many have to offer. The only way to achieve our full potential is to channel the talents, ideas and contributions of every person in the world. Can our generation eliminate poverty and hunger? Can we provide everyone with basic healthcare? Can we build inclusive and welcoming communities? Can we nurture peaceful and understanding relationships between people of all nations? Can we truly empower everyone -- women, children, underrepresented minorities, immigrants and the unconnected? If our generation makes the right investments, the answer to each of these questions can be yes -- and hopefully within your lifetime. • • • This mission -- advancing human potential and promoting equality -- will require a new approach for all working towards these goals. We must make long term investments over 25, 50 or even 100 years. The greatest challenges require very long time horizons and cannot be solved by short term thinking. We must engage directly with the people we serve. We can’t empower people if we don‘t understand the needs and desires of their communities. We must build technology to make change. Many institutions invest money in these challenges, but most progress comes from productivity gains through innovation. We must participate in policy and advocacy to shape debates. Many institutions are unwilling to do this, but progress must be supported by movements to be sustainable. We must back the strongest and most independent leaders in each field. Partnering with experts is more effective for the mission than trying to lead efforts ourselves. We must take risks today to learn lessons for tomorrow. We’re early in our learning and many things we try won‘t work, but we’ll listen and learn and keep improving. • • • Our experience with personalized learning, internet access, and community education and health has shaped our philosophy. Our generation grew up in classrooms where we all learned the same things at the same pace regardless of our interests or needs. Your generation will set goals for what you want to become -- like an engineer, health worker, writer or community leader. You‘ll have technology that understands how you learn best and where you need to focus. You’ll advance quickly in subjects that interest you most, and get as much help as you need in your most challenging areas. You‘ll explore topics that aren’t even offered in schools today. Your teachers will also have better tools and data to help you achieve your goals. Even better, students around the world will be able to use personalized learning tools over the internet, even if they don‘t live near good schools. Of course it will take more than technology to give everyone a fair start in life, but personalized learning can be one scalable way to give all children a better education and more equal opportunity. We’re starting to build this technology now, and the results are already promising. Not only do students perform better on tests, but they gain the skills and confidence to learn anything they want. And this journey is just beginning. The technology and teaching will rapidly improve every year you‘re in school. Your mother and I have both taught students and we’ve seen what it takes to make this work. It will take working with the strongest leaders in education to help schools around the world adopt personalized learning. It will take engaging with communities, which is why we‘re starting in our San Francisco Bay Area community. It will take building new technology and trying new ideas. And it will take making mistakes and learning many lessons before achieving these goals. But once we understand the world we can create for your generation, we have a responsibility as a society to focus our investments on the future to make this reality. Together, we can do this. And when we do, personalized learning will not only help students in good schools, it will help provide more equal opportunity to anyone with an internet connection. • • • Many of the greatest opportunities for your generation will come from giving everyone access to the internet. People often think of the internet as just for entertainment or communication. But for the majority of people in the world, the internet can be a lifeline. It provides education if you don’t live near a good school. It provides health information on how to avoid diseases or raise healthy children if you don‘t live near a doctor. It provides financial services if you don’t live near a bank. It provides access to jobs and opportunities if you don‘t live in a good economy. The internet is so important that for every 10 people who gain internet access, about one person is lifted out of poverty and about one new job is created. Yet still more than half of the world’s population -- more than 4 billion people -- don‘t have access to the internet. If our generation connects them, we can lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty. We can also help hundreds of millions of children get an education and save millions of lives by helping people avoid disease. This is another long term effort that can be advanced by technology and partnership. It will take inventing new technology to make the internet more affordable and bring access to unconnected areas. It will take partnering with governments, non-profits and companies. It will take engaging with communities to understand what they need. Good people will have different views on the best path forward, and we will try many efforts before we succeed. But together we can succeed and create a more equal world. • • • Technology can’t solve problems by itself. Building a better world starts with building strong and healthy communities. Children have the best opportunities when they can learn. And they learn best when they‘re healthy. Health starts early -- with loving family, good nutrition and a safe, stable environment. Children who face traumatic experiences early in life often develop less healthy minds and bodies. Studies show physical changes in brain development leading to lower cognitive ability. Your mother is a doctor and educator, and she has seen this firsthand. If you have an unhealthy childhood, it’s difficult to reach your full potential. If you have to wonder whether you‘ll have food or rent, or worry about abuse or crime, then it’s difficult to reach your full potential. If you fear you‘ll go to prison rather than college because of the color of your skin, or that your family will be deported because of your legal status, or that you may be a victim of violence because of your religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, then it’s difficult to reach your full potential. We need institutions that understand these issues are all connected. That‘s the philosophy of the new type of school your mother is building. By partnering with schools, health centers, parent groups and local governments, and by ensuring all children are well fed and cared for starting young, we can start to treat these inequities as connected. Only then can we collectively start to give everyone an equal opportunity. It will take many years to fully develop this model. But it’s another example of how advancing human potential and promoting equality are tightly linked. If we want either, we must first build inclusive and healthy communities. • • • For your generation to live in a better world, there is so much more our generation can do. Today your mother and I are committing to spend our lives doing our small part to help solve these challenges. I will continue to serve as Facebook‘s CEO for many, many years to come, but these issues are too important to wait until you or we are older to begin this work. By starting at a young age, we hope to see compounding benefits throughout our lives. As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities. We will give 99% of our Facebook shares -- currently about $45 billion -- during our lives to advance this mission. We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others. We’ll share more details in the coming months once we settle into our new family rhythm and return from our maternity and paternity leaves. We understand you‘ll have many questions about why and how we’re doing this. As we become parents and enter this next chapter of our lives, we want to share our deep appreciation for everyone who makes this possible. We can do this work only because we have a strong global community behind us. Building Facebook has created resources to improve the world for the next generation. Every member of the Facebook community is playing a part in this work. We can make progress towards these opportunities only by standing on the shoulders of experts -- our mentors, partners and many incredible people whose contributions built these fields. And we can only focus on serving this community and this mission because we are surrounded by loving family, supportive friends and amazing colleagues. We hope you will have such deep and inspiring relationships in your life too. Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children. We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can‘t wait to see what you bring to this world. Love, Mom and Dad

아이 앰 해피(I’m happy).” 조은지기자 zone4@seoul.co.kr
